Ted Johnson and Tom E. Curran give their immediate reaction to the Patriots loss out in San Francisco on Postgame Live,
What to Know
- Jacoby Brissett was sacked six times and took 10 QB hits in the loss.
- The Patriots fumbled four times (losing two) while Brissett threw a pick-6. They lost the turnover battle 3-1.
- The 49ers essentially doubled New England in net yards, 431 to 216.
- The Patriots have started 1-3 for the fourth consecutive season. They'll host the 1-2 Miami Dolphins in Week 5.
The New England Patriots entered Sunday's Week 4 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers as heavy underdogs -- and it turns out that was warranted. Here's our recap and postgame analysis of an ugly 30-13 Patriots loss at Levi's Stadium.
Perry: Pats offense looks ‘completely punchless' after latest loss
By Darren Hartwell

Phil Perry joins Postgame Live to discuss the Patriots tough offensive performance vs. the 49ers.
The New England Patriots' 30-13 loss to San Francisco 49ers on Sunday was ugly on multiple levels. But if you ask Patriots Insider Phil Perry, the most concerning part of their game is still the offense.
New England mustered just 216 total yards at Levi's Stadium. The team has scored one touchdown in the last eight quarters and ranks 31st in the NFL in points scored per game (13.0), dead last in passing yards per game (112.3) and 30th in yards per play (4.0).
Put another way:
"They're completely punchless offensively," Perry said Sunday night on Patriots Postgame Live following the game.
Curran: Starting Drake Maye would be a ‘panic move' for Patriots
By Darren Hartwell

Tom E. Curran discusses why he believes that the Patriots veering from their plan with Drake Maye in Week 5 would be a panic move, despite Jacoby Brissett’s performance vs. the 49ers.
If you watched the New England Patriots get demolished by the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, you're probably in one of two camps.
The first camp would argue it's time to bench starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett -- who tallied just 168 passing yards and threw a pick-6 in the 30-13 defeat -- and insert Drake Maye. The Patriots' offense literally can't look any worse (they rank dead-last in passing yards per game and 31st in points scored), so why not see what the rookie can do?
The other camp would argue that starting Maye in front of this patchwork offensive line would be malpractice; New England has allowed the NFL's highest QB pressure rate (47.4 percent) and given up 13 sacks in its last two games while starting four different offensive tackles in four contests. It's hard to imagine Maye would fare much better than Brissett, and there's an obvious risk of hindering his long-term development.
On a new episode of the Patriots Talk Podcast following the team's latest defeat, Patriots Insider Tom E. Curran explained why he's in the latter camp, and why this team needs to stick to its original plan -- for better or worse.

Jerod Mayo got candid about the Patriots issues with turnovers vs. the 49ers after losing 30-13.
Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers marked another dismal showing for the New England Patriots offense.
Jacoby Brissett was sacked six times behind an injury-riddled offensive line. The veteran quarterback was 19-for-32 with 168 passing yards, one touchdown and an interception that was returned for a touchdown by 49ers linebacker Fred Warner.
That was one of three New England turnovers on the day. Brissett lost a fumble, as did running back Rhamondre Stevenson, who fumbled for the fourth consecutive game.
"We don't have a team that can lose the turnover battle and expect to win a football game," Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said after the 30-13 loss. "We've got to do a better job with the turnovers; we have to do a better job with the negative plays."
Ted Johnson: Brissett was ‘a detriment' to Patriots in loss vs. 49ers
By Nick Goss

Ted Johnson and Tom E. Curran give their immediate reaction to the Patriots loss out in San Francisco on Postgame Live,
The New England Patriots are not getting the kind of quarterback performance they need from starter Jacoby Brissett, but will it lead to a change at the position entering Week 5?
The Patriots fell to 1-3 after a 30-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday's Week 4 game at Levi's Stadium.
Brissett completed 19 of 32 pass attempts for 168 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The interception was returned by 49ers linebacker Fred Warner for a touchdown early in the second quarter that put San Francisco ahead 13-0. The veteran quarterback also fumbled twice and lost one of them.
"(The Patriots) have really been building him up -- 'He's tough, he takes a lot of hits, he does everything we ask him to do, he's protecting the football.' He didn't do any of that in the game today," Ted Johnson said on NBC Sports Boston's Patriots Postgame Live, as seen in the video player above.

Caedan Wallace on crutches after Patriots-49ers
By Phil Perry, Patriots Insider
Rookie offensive lineman Caedan Wallace is leaving the locker room on crutches and with a walking boot on. He left today’s game with an ankle injury.

The 49ers outgained the Patriots 431 to 216 in total net yards on Sunday.
The Patriots have lost three consecutive games after starting the 2024 NFL season with a Week 1 victory. The latest defeat came Sunday in a Week 4 matchup versus the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium. The Patriots lost 30-13 in a game that was more lopsided than the final score might suggest.
Once again, the Patriots passing attack and offensive line struggled. Jacoby Brissett completed 19 of 32 pass attempts for 168 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The offensive line allowed six sacks and 10 QB hits.
Injuries were another problem for the Patriots on Sunday. They lost starting center David Andrews (shoulder), starting left tackle Caedan Wallace (ankle) and starting safety Kyle Dugger (ankle) to injuries. All three players exited the game in the first half and didn't return.
The Patriots also committed three turnovers.
WATCH: Joey Slye drills longest field goal in Patriots history
By Justin Leger

Joey Slye addresses the media after he broke a personal and franchise record during the Patriots’ loss to the 49ers.
Kicker Joey Slye was one of the few bright spots for the New England Patriots offense in Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Slye put the Patriots on the board with a 63-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter. The kick set a new record as the longest field goal in franchise history, surpassing Stephen Gostkowski's previous mark of 62 yards.
Slye added a 54-yarder later in the game to finish 2-for-2 on field goals, but it wasn't nearly enough to keep pace with the 49ers' offensive onslaught. San Francisco cruised to a 30-13 victory that brings New England to 1-3 heading into a Week 5 matchup vs. the Miami Dolphins.
Turnover alert: Nick Bosa finally gets a sack, then recovers fumble
By Nick Goss
The Patriots have coughed up the ball for the third time today. Jacoby Brissett was strip sacked by 49ers pass rusher Nick Bosa. Bosa also recovered the fumble. The 49ers have forced three turnovers in this game, including two from Brissett (pick-6, fumble).

Joey Slye has been the Patriots' best player today. The veteran kicker just made his second field goal in as many tries -- this one from 54 yards out. He set a team record with a 63-yard field goal just before halftime.

It didn't take long for the 49ers to respond to the Patriots' first touchdown of the game. San Francisco drove 70 yards on four plays in just 1:57 of game time to find the end zone and increase its lead back to 17.
A 53-yard pass from Brock Purdy to Deebo Samuel was the highlight of the drive for the 49ers.

The Patriots have forced their first turnover since Week 1. 49ers kick returner Isaac Guerendo fumbled the second half kickoff and the Patriots recovered at San Francisco's 27-yard line.
The Patriots are on their way to a third consecutive loss unless they can make some adjustments and play a flawless second half.
The Patriots offense is still a mess. This group didn't crack 100 total yards in the first half. Turnovers also were a problem for New England. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson fumbled and quarterback Jacoby Brissett threw a pick-6.
The most notable offensive play for the Patriots was a 63-yard field goal by kicker Joey Slye as time expired in the first half. It set a new team record for longest field goal -- the previous record was 62 yards by Stephen Gostkowski.
Injuries are piling up for the Patriots, too. Three key players left the game in the first half:
- C David Andrews (Shoulder, questionable to return)
- LT Caedan Wallace (Ankle, questionable to return)
- S Kyle Dugger (Ankle, questionable to return)
The Patriots got on the scoreboard as time expired in the first half with a 63-yard field goal by kicker Joey Slye. Slye is now the record holder for the longest field goal in team history. Stephen Gostkowski held the previous record at 62 yards.

Slye has made seven of his eight field goal attempts so far this season. This 63-yarder was his first make from 50-plus yards.
The 49ers had two touchdowns wiped away due to penalties on this drive. They ultimately found the end zone a third time when tight end George Kittle hauled in a 12-yard pass between three (!) Patriots defenders, and there were no penalties this time. The 6-foot-4 Kittle was just too strong.

Injury updates: Caedan Wallace, Kyle Dugger questionable to return
By Nick Goss
The Patriots announced rookie left tackle Caedan Wallace is questionable to return with an ankle injuy. Wallace suffered the injury on the fourth-and-1 play that halted New England's previous drive.
Vetean safety Kyle Dugger also is questionable to return due to an ankle injury.
The Patriots already lost starting center David Andrews (shoulder) earlier in the game. He's also questionable to return.
The Patriots put together a good drive that went 50 yards on 11 plays. Unfortunately for them, they couldn't keep it going by getting one more yard.
Rhamondre Stevenson was tackled short of the line to gain on a fourth-and-1 run up the middle, giving the 49ers the ball back at their own 20-yard line. The Patriots have now entered 49ers territory twice and have zero points to show for it.
Patriots rookie left tackle Caedan Wallace also suffered an injury on the Pats' failed fourth-and-1 and was helped into the blue medical tent. New England's depth at offensive tackle is already very thin.
Jerod Mayo has the offense huddled up around him and is speaking to them animatedly after that pick-6. Just a brutal start for the Patriots offense with two turnovers in four plays that led directly to points.
It's getting ugly for the Patriots.
They have turned the ball over on back-to-back drives, the latest being a Jacoby Brissett interception that was returned by 49ers linebacker Fred Warner for a touchdown. The pick-6 gave the 49ers a 13-0 lead with 13:59 left in the second quarter.

Here's a summary of the Patriots' three drives so far:
- Punt on fourth-and-3 from the 49ers' 41-yard line
- Fumble
- Pick-6
Give the Patriots defense credit: They held the 49ers to a field goal on the first two drives of the game.
The second came after running back Rhamondre Stevenson fumbled and the 49ers recovered at the Patiots' 30-yard line. New England's defense allowed one first down before ultimately halting San Francisco at the 8-yard line. Jake Moody hit a 26-yard field goal to double the 49ers' lead to 6-0.
Turnover alert: Rhamondre Stevenson fumbles again
By Nick Goss and Phil Perry, Patriots Insider
The 49ers have the ball again after Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson fumbled for the fourth time in four games this season. Ball security has been an issue for Stevenson. It's unfortunate for the Patriots because Stevenson has been their most effective offensive player this season, but these fumbles are really difficult for this team to overcome.
The Pats aren't built to play from behind. It will be interesting to see if Stevenson is benched or loses some carries to Antonio Gibson.

The 49ers put together a good first drive, but the Patriots defense held strong to hold the home team to a field goal. Jake Moody connected on a 22-yard attempt to give San Francisco a 3-0 advantage.
Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones broke up a pass intended for 49ers wideout Jauan Johnson on third-and-goal.
The 49ers went 3-of-4 on third downs during that drive, and quarterback Brock Purdy converted a couple of them with his legs (12 rushing yards on two attempts). The Patriots have to do a better job keeping Purdy in the pocket.

The New England Patriots lost the anchor of their offensive line during Sunday's Week 4 matchup vs. the San Francisco 49ers.
Veteran center David Andrews exited to the locker room during the Patriots' opening drive and was listed as questionable to return due to a shoulder injury. He was replaced by Nick Leverett.
In the third quarter, the Patriots officially ruled Andrews out for the remainder of the game. Offensive tackle Caedan Wallace and safety Kyle Dugger also were ruled out after being carted off the field with ankle injuries.
Andrews' status will be worth monitoring heading into Week 5. The 32-year-old is an irreplaceable piece of a Patriots offensive line that has already been plagued by injuries this season.

Patriots center David Andrews is questionable to return with a shoulder injury, per the team
Andrews -- one of the team's captains and most important players -- headed to the locker room after the Patriots' first drive. Nick Leverett is the next man up at center.
No sign of David Andrews on the sideline ahead of this drive. I argued in the summer he might've been their most indispensable player based on what's behind him. Nick Leverett is next up at that spot.

A decent first drive ended with a fourth-and-three at the 49ers' 41-yard line. Instead of going for it, the Patriots tried to draw the 49ers offside. When that didn't work, New England took the delay of game penalty and then punted. It was a conservative decision and a missed opportunity to potentially score first.

Breer: What needs to happen for Drake Maye to start for Patriots
By Darren Hartwell

Albert Breer joins Pregame Live to discuss what he’s hearing from the NFL, and what he is hearing about Drake Maye’s start date as Patriots head into their Week-4 matchup vs the 49ers.
For better or worse, the most important question surrounding the 2024 New England Patriots involves Drake Maye, and specifically when the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft will make his first career start.
Maye has been making significant progress behind the scenes, with our Phil Perry hearing from multiple Patriots players who have been impressed with rookie quarterback's poise and processing ability in practice. And after Maye saw his first game action last Thursday night in New England's blowout loss to the New York Jets, the calls to play the rookie over veteran Jacoby Brissett have grown louder.
NFL Media's Ian Rapoport threw cold water on those calls Sunday morning, insisting that Maye is "a ways away" from starting in New England. But the rookie QB does appear to be gaining positive momentum. Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer offered more insight Sunday into Maye's development and what the team thought of his NFL debut against the Jets on NBC Sports Boston's Patriots Pregame Live.
"What they saw in that game against the Jets, they saw his legs show up, they saw his overall athleticism show up, and a really important piece of this too, they saw his ability to take a hit," Breer said. "That wasn't intentional. They didn't want to see him get beat up, but they did get to see that piece of it."
The 49ers are dealing with plenty of injuries, but they should have Deebo Samuel back for today's game.
The star wide receiver sat out in Week 3 due to a calf injury but is expected to play in Patriots-49ers, per Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz.

According to his teammates, Drake Maye has been looking ‘smooth’ in Patriots practice as he continues to take 30% of first-team reps.
Drake Maye has been turning heads in practice, as our Phil Perry spoke to several teammates who have been impressed by the Patriots rookie.
That said, it sounds like he's not starting anytime soon, barring an injury to starter Jacoby Brissett.
"My understanding is (Maye is) still a ways away from being on the field," NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday, as seen in the video below. "The Patriots have not started the ramp-up process. He's still getting about 30 percent of the snaps in practice."

Patriots-49ers preview: Pats should have room to run in Week 4
By Phil Perry, Patriots Insider

Phil Perry explains why Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers is so important for Jerod Mayo and the Patriots.
FOXBORO -- The Patriots have an opportunity at a do-over on Sunday.
No, they won't be able to change the outcome of their Thursday night dud last week. But there are similarities between their opponent that night, the Jets, and the one that awaits them in San Francisco. And those similarities will allow Jerod Mayo, his assistants and their players to show that the things they should have done in New Jersey are things they can do at Levi's Stadium this weekend and moving forward.
The easiest correction? Play with more energy and emotion than they showed in their sleepy 24-3 divisional defeat. This game will be a test of the culture Mayo has worked to implement since he was hired. How bought in are his players to his message? How will they respond to what was an embarrassing performance 10 days earlier?
Next on the list: Run the football effectively against the Niners, something they should've been able to do against the lackluster run defense the Jets exhibited through two weeks of the regular season. The Niners have been even worse in that regard, which means opportunities will be there on the ground for offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt's unit.
Patriots injury report: Key lineman could return for 49ers game
By Justin Leger

Jerod Mayo gives an update on Patriots offensive lineman Sidy Sow who is hopeful to return Week 4 vs. the San Francisco 49ers.
The New England Patriots could have four of their five starting offensive linemen active for Sunday's Week 4 matchup vs. the San Francisco 49ers.
Left guard Sidy Sow is officially listed as questionable on New England's Friday injury report. The 2023 fourth-round draft pick has been sidelined since Week 1 with an ankle issue.
Sow's availability will be key because his backup, Michael Jordan, has been ruled out with an ankle injury of his own. If Sow and Jordan are out, preseason acquisition Zachary Thomas presumably would start at left guard vs. San Francisco.
Left tackle remains a concern with Chukwuma Okorafor on the exempt/left squad list and Vederian Lowe out with a knee injury. Rookie right tackle Caedan Wallace moved to the left side in Week 3, but he is listed as questionable with a knee issue.
