What we learned in Pats-Jets: Pass protection woes are unsustainable

What we learned in Pats-Jets: Pass protection woes are unsustainable

Michael Holley, Tom E. Curran and Ted Johnson offer instant reaction and analysis following the New England Patriots’ 24-3 loss to the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ --  Each and every week, we'll be highlighting a variety of the lessons gathered from the latest Patriots matchup. Of course, there was no shortage of teaching moments in Thursday's 24-3 loss to the Jets.

Here's what we learned...

With the game out of reach, and with starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett getting walloped on a regular basis, the Patriots got their rookie signal-caller into a regular-season game for the first time.

They gave Maye four designed runs and 12 dropbacks. On those dozen would-be passes, he actually got throws off on eight of them, completing four for 22 yards. He was sacked twice and scrambled twice -- once for a first down on fourth-and-8, once yielding a massive hit after a 1-yard pickup -- and he took one shot as he threw incomplete.

Drake Maye reacts to making NFL debut in Patriots' loss to Jets

Ted Johnson and Tom E. Curran react to Drake Maye’s debut in the NFL and discuss how valuable playing time in a situation like this can be for a rookie QB.

It took just three games for Drake Maye to take his first snaps as an NFL player.

The New England Patriots rookie quarterback made his pro debut late in the fourth quarter of Thursday night's Week 3 loss to the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

The outcome was already decided when Maye entered the game with 4:24 left on the clock and the Patriots trailing 24-3. He completed four of eight pass attempts for 22 yards. He also scrambled outside the pocket a couple times and picked up 12 rushing yards. Maye also was hit five times and sacked twice.

"Just wanted to go out there, try to make some plays and have some fun," Maye told reporters in the locker room, as seen on NBC Sports Boston's Patriots Postgame Live. "Felt a little nervous running out there. What a night with the crowd and the atmosphere to get my first game under my belt."

Curran, Johnson react to Pats' abysmal performance vs. Jets

Curran, Johnson react to Pats' abysmal performance vs. Jets

Michael Holley, Tom E. Curran and Ted Johnson offer instant reaction and analysis following the New England Patriots’ 24-3 loss to the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football.

Nothing went right for the New England Patriots in Thursday night's Week 3 showdown with the New York Jets.

As head coach Jerod Mayo put it after his team's 24-3 loss, they were "not good in any phase of the game." They totaled just 139 yards while the Jets tallied 400. The porous offensive line allowed 15 quarterback hits, including seven sacks.

Now 1-2 on the season, the Patriots have crashed back down to earth since their surprising Week 1 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. NBC Sports Boston's Patriots insider Tom E. Curran believes the last two weeks are a more accurate representation of who they are: a deeply flawed team that must play a perfect game to have a shot at a victory.

"The Patriots are not a good enough team to play anything less than perfect football and have a chance of winning," Curran said on Patriots Postgame Live. "And even if they play almost perfect football, they might still lose, last week being a perfect example of it. Two mistakes cost them the game.

FINAL: Jets beat Patriots 24-3

Robert Deutsch-Imagn ImagesPatriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett

The Patriots allowed seven sacks and 15 QB hits in Thursday’s 24-3 loss.

The Patriots are now 1-2 after losing their first road game versus the Jets since 2015.

New England's offensive line was atrocious tonight. This group was penalized multiple times, while allowing seven sacks and 15 (!) QB hits.

The offensive line issues made it really tough for quarterback Jacoby Brissett to do anything in the passing attack. He completed 12 of 18 pass attempts for 98 yards. He took a bunch of hard hits.

Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye made his NFL debut on the team's final drive of the game. He completed four of eight pass attempts for 22 yards and rushed for 12 yards on two carries. He was sacked twice and hit multiple times despite playing one possession.

Drake Maye completes first pass

Drake Maye nearly through an interception on his first pass attempt. He then took a huge hit on a third-down scramble, but got right back up. His first completion went to running back Antonio Gibson for no gain. Maye also picked up 11 yards on a scramble on a fourth-and-eight play.

Maye found DeMario Douglas for an 11-yard gain over the middle of the field.

Maye's first drive went 46 yards on 16 plays before the game clock expired. It was the second-longest drive of the night for New England. He also was sacked twice and hit three times on the drive. Maye completed four of eight pass attempts for 22 yards in his first NFL action.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye -- the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft -- is jogging onto the field to make his NFL debut with 4:24 left in the fourth quarter.

Keion White update

This game just keeps getting worse for the Patriots. New England pass rusher Keion White appeared to be a little banged up on that last drive, but he did get off the field on his own.

SEP 19, 202410:51 PM EDT

Score alert: Jets kick field goal, boost lead to 24-3

After missing a field goal in the first half, Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein just hit one from 28 yards out to increase his team's lead to 24-3.

SEP 19, 202410:47 PM EDT

Rhamondre Stevenson fumbles

The first turnover of the game is a fumble by Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson. This is the third time Stevenson has fumbled this season, but it's the first one he's lost.

The Jets lead 21-3 early in the fourth quarter.

SEP 19, 202410:27 PM EDT

Patriots offensive line still struggling

The latest Patriots drive just ended with three consecutive holding penalties on the offensive line (two were accepted) and another sack allowed. Jacoby Brissett now has been sacked four times and hit nine times. The veteran quarterback was slow to get up after the last sack, but he appears to be OK.

SEP 19, 202410:19 PM EDT

Score alert: Jets lead 21-3 on Rodgers' first ever TD pass to Wilson

Aaron Rodgers has thrown his first ever touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson, and the Jets have a commanding 21-3 lead as a result.

Rodgers made a perfect throw to connect with Wilson. Even a slightly worse throw probably gets intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez. In fact, this was the first touchdown Gonzalez has allowed in coverage during his brief pro career (seven games).

Rough start to second half for Patriots

The Patriots got the ball to begin the second half but their offense went three-and-out. Jacoby Brissett got drilled as he threw the ball on third-and-4. He has been hit on seven of his 15 dropbacks in this game.

Halftime: Jets lead 14-3

Brad Penner-Imagn ImagesJets quarterback Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers completed 15 of 18 pass attempts for 170 yards and a touchdown in the first half.

The Jets are in total command of this game.

Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has completed 15 of 18 pass attempts for 170 yards and a touchdown. He completed a pass to eight different players. Running back Breece Hall has tallied 66 total yards (43 rushing, 23 passing) with a rushing touchdown. New York's defense held New England to just 40 total yards and four first downs in the first half.

Two issues from last week are again problems for the Patriots: offensive line struggles and a non-existent passing attack. Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett has been sacked three times and hit five times. He completed six of eight pass attempts for just 24 yards in the first half.

One bright spot for the Patriots has been cornerback Christian Gonzalez. He has mostly taken Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson out of this game so far.

SEP 19, 20249:20 PM EDT

Score alert: Patriots kick field goal, trim Jets' lead to 14-3

The Patriots are finally on the board.

Joey Slye hit a 44-yard field goal to trim the Jets' lead to 14-3 with 4:26 remaining in the second quarter. Slye is 6-for-7 on field goal attempts this season.

New England picked up 50 yards on eight plays during that scoring drive. A 34-yard pass interference penalty by Jets cornerback D.J. Reed helped the Patriots get into scoring position.

Jabrill Peppers injury update

Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers is officially questionable to return due to an ankle injury.

SEP 19, 20249:07 PM EDT

Score alert: Jets take 14-0 lead on Breece Hall rushing TD

The Jets have doubled their lead to 14-0 after running back Breece Hall scored on a one-yard touchdown run. It capped off a 13-play drive that went 91 yards and took 7:47 off the clock.

This is the largest deficit the Patriots have faced this season.

Patriots pass defense is getting carved up

Over the last five quarters, Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith and Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers are a combined 41-for-53 for 390 yards and two touchdowns. The Patriots need to generate some semblance of pressure but the ball is coming out faster than it can get there.

SEP 19, 20248:45 PM EDT

Ja'Whaun Bentley absence is a factor early on

The Patriots are missing injured linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley. Three runs for 26 yards on that scoring drive for the Jets. Four runs in all for 33 yards to this point.

SEP 19, 20248:42 PM EDT

Score alert: Jets take 7-0 lead on Rodgers TD pass

The Jets have opened the scoring.

Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed a 10-yard pass to wide receiver Allen Lazard to put New York up 7-0 with 4:21 left in the first quarter.

The Jets drove 73 yards on eight plays in just 4:13.

Alex Austin was the cornerback coveraging Lazard. It didn't go well, to say the least.

SEP 19, 20248:33 PM EDT

Rough start for Patriots offensive line

Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett was given almost no time to throw on both of his first two pass attempts. He was under pressure each time from the Jets pass rush. Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson was able to pick up only one yard on his first carry.

Overall, a very tough first drive for the Patriots offensive line with two rookies starting.

Good start for Patriots defense

The Jets picked up a couple first downs, but a holding penalty and a sack by Deatrich Wise Jr. forced New York to punt.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft was interviewed by Taylor Rooks on the Amazon Prime broadcast Thursday night and talked about Jerod Mayo, including an interesting comment about when he considered the former linebacker to be the franchise's next head coach after Bill Belichick.

"Jerod learned a lot from Bill in the technical background, but they're each special individuals," Kraft said. "I've gotten to know Jerod over the last 15 years and, you know, I picked him five years ago to be our next head coach. ... It's great that he had the ability to train under Bill."

The Jets announced the following players are inactive:

Chukwuma Okorafor ineligible to return to Patriots this season

Chukwuma Okorafor ineligible to return to Patriots this season

Tom E. Curran, Phil Perry and Tom Giles weigh in on whether or not a struggling offensive line could be the reason the Patriots have to start Drake Maye earlier than anticipated.

Veteran offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor will not play another down for the New England Patriots in 2024.

Okorafor was placed on the exempt/left squad list on Saturday. The 27-year-old reportedly left the team to "ponder his future" in the NFL.

The Patriots moved Okorafor from the exempt/left squad list to the reserve/left squad on Thursday, per ESPN's Field Yates. Teams are granted a five-day exemption when moving a player to the left squad list, but if the player does not return within five days, his season is over.

Five days have passed since Okorafor's placement on the exempt/left squad list, so he can't return to the team this season.
