Stanley Cup odds: Canadiens are the ultimate underdogs

Share

There's been plenty of discussion about how Bruins fans should feel about the Montreal Canadiens playing the role of Cinderella for these Stanley Cup Playoffs. Most people in the Boston area can't stand the thought of the Habs pulling off upset over upset while some - like my guy DJ Bean - are rooting for the madness, the ridiculousness of Montreal coming out of nowhere to win the damn thing.

But also consider it from a gambling perspective. The Canadiens are the ultimate underdogs, having been the betting favorites in two games (Games 3 & 4 vs. Winnipeg) out of the 16 they've played this postseason. Our friends at PointsBet Sportsbook even dropped them to +15000 when they trailed Toronto 3-1 in the opening series less than a month ago. That means a measly $10 bet could have won you $1,500. And for reference, that's not far behind the St. Louis Blues who dropped to +25000 in January of 2019, months before their Stanley Cup playoff run.

After beating Toronto, Montreal surged to +1600 and then made a small step to +1200 after sweeping the Jets. But as they get set for Game 6 with a chance to close out Vegas and advance to the final, the Montreal Canadiens are now +325 to win the Cup, trailing only Tampa Bay at +150.

Even after dominating the Golden Knights in Game 5, the Canadiens are still underdogs at home for Thursday's Game 6 at +120 (Vegas -140). But it's also the first time you could consider them slight underdogs in the series. And for what it's worth, the NBC Sports EDGE prediction feels "strong" about backing Montreal to close out the series Thursday evening.
