Was Cherington not allowed to make big deal at deadline?

Despite all the rumors, the Red Sox were relatively quiet at the 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline.

Perhaps the most surprising thing is that Mike Napoli and Alejandro De Aza weren't dealt.

On the Felger and Mazz show, Mazz, Adam Jones and Chris Gasper discuss if GM Ben Cherington wasn't allowed to make a big deal, the way the Bruins handcuffed Peter Chiarelli before he was fired.

"I guess it’s possible but that’s not my belief," Jones said. "The big difference between the Red Sox and the Bruins is the Bruins were in the mix for something, the Bruins had something to play for. The red sox have nothing, right? I don’t think they were telling him you can’t trade Napoli. I don’t see any benefit to handcuffing him on that."
