Red Sox bullpen implodes in 13-3 loss to Yankees

NEW YORK - With the major league debut of Henry Owens, the Red Sox were both interesting and competitive for the first five or so innings Tuesday night.

Then the bullpen took over.

Owens was yanked after allowing two hits to open the sixth, and the bullpen then made a mess of things, allowing both inherited runs to score - and then another 10 of their own in a 13-3 beating by the New York Yankees.

Owens survived a shaky first in which he threw 34 pitches and settled down thereafter. After a leadoff single to start the second, he retired 12 in a row before running into trouble in the sixth.

He showed improved command after the first when he consistently fell behind to Yankee hitters. He walked just one and struck out five.

Robbie Ross Jr. allowed a run and Jean Machi was torched for three more. Craig Breslow was tagged for a three-run homer by Brian McCann and also yielded two hard-hit doubles. Alexi Ogando allowed his 11th homer of the season on the first pitch he threw.

The Red Sox developed very little offensive rhythm, limited to just one hit over the first four innings by stater Masahiro Tanaka.

Blake Swihart's opposite field line single to left and a sacrifice fly by Jackie Bradley Jr. gave the Red Sox a short-lived 2-1 lead in the fifth.

A long homer to right from Pablo Sandoval accounted for the only other Red Sox run, as the Sox were limited to just seven hits on the night -- including just three after the fifth inning.
