With John Farrell's status beyond the 2015 season up in the air The Baseball Show crew decided to make a shortlist of potential managerial candidates.
The usual suspects were mentioned - Torey Lovullo, Jason Varitek.
But Bob Neumeier throws another familiar name into the mix. How about Mike Lowell?
While Tim Britton sees Varitek as an option, he doesn't think a recently retired player is the answer for the Red Sox.
"You look at the number of recent players who have been hired as managers, a lot of them haven't quite worked out as you'd think," said Britton. "Ryne Sandberg worked his way up through the minor leagues as a manager, resigned in Philly earlier this year. Robin Ventura in Chicago is under fire a little bit with the White Sox who have been a disappointment. Even Mike Matheny in St. Louis, things have gone great for them, but a lot of people don't really like his in-game managing. [Brad] Ausmus might not survive the year in Detroit. So there's a lot of guys like that. It seems to be a trend in baseball, and a lot of them haven't really worked out the way people would've expected."
