Postcard from Camp: Tre Jackson gets carted off

Share

FOXBORO -- The Patriots were back in action after a day off on Sunday. It was their 13th training camp practice, which was not open to the public.

WEATHER
The sun was out and it was strong. Temperatures exceeded 90 degrees throughout the afternoon, and the Patriots coaching staff made sure to provide a few moments for water breaks.

WHAT THEY WORE
Players wore full pads. Brian Tyms shed his red non-contact jersey, a sign that he's progressing from an apparent upper-body injury suffered early in camp.

LeGarrette Blount wore a jersey with No. 74 for some reason. At his size, about 250 pounds, he's not all that much smaller than some of his teammates who play on the line of scrimmage and would be more apt to sport that kind of number.

Quarterbacks Tom Brady, Jimmy Garoppolo and Ryan Lindley wore red non-contact jerseys.

ATTENDANCE REPORT
The Patriots got tackle Nate Solder back on the field for Monday's practice. Running back James White was also in attendance after missing Saturday's session as he nursed a knee ailment suffered in Thursday's game against the Packers. Corner Tarell Brown, who left Saturday's session early, was present and accounted for.

Center Bryan Stork, running back Travaris Cadet, tight end Scott Chandler, receiver Aaron Dobson, corner Darryl Roberts, linebacker Rufus Johnson, defensive lineman Joe Vellano, rookie defensive lineman Trey Flowers and offensive lineman Caleb Hauptmann (non-football injury list) were not seen.

Dane Fletcher, Chris Jones, Ryan Wendell and Brandon LaFell -- all on the physically unable to perform list -- were out.

Stork and Chandler were seen doing some conditioning work at one point during the workout.

WHAT WE SAW
* Rookie guard Tre' Jackson suffered an injury about midway through the session. He was worked on by trainers with what looked like a lower-body injury. He was carted off the field and did not return.

* Undrafted rookie David Andrews appeared to fill in at right guard for Jackson. Rookie Shaq Mason continued to get the majority of reps at left guard. Josh Kline got plenty of work at center with Bryan Stork out.

* The Patriots did some interesting mixing and matching in the secondary with different combinations of corners and safeties switching in and out of various spot. Malcolm Butler at left corner seemed to be the one fixture in the defensive backfield's top group. What a difference a year has made for the product of West Alabama.

* Sebastian Vollmer saw good time at right tackle, which is a good development for the veteran who is coming off offseason shoulder surgery. Cannon also figured in at the right tackle spot.

* Credit to the Patriots defense, which was tempted to be drawn offside during a short-yardage period by several loud snap counts from Brady but didn't budge.

* James Develin and Blount had good snaps in short-yardage periods. That's about 500 pounds in the Patriots backfield.

* Matthew Slater was back in his usual role as traffic cop during kickoff return periods. Danny Amendola was alongside as the primary returner.

* Former Rutgers and Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano was a spectator at practice, spending some time with assistant to the coaching staff Mike Lombardi.

* The team went through several end-of-game or end-of-half situations involving clock management and getting the field-goal unit onto the field quickly.

* After a two-hour practice, players went to the hills adjacent to the practice field for some conditioning runs.
