Could Patriots be looking Randy Moss' way again?

Randy Moss has itch, should Pats scratch it?

The Patriots are wafer-thin at wideout and Randy Moss sounds like he wants back in.

On Sunday, Moss told his FOX Sports colleague Curt Menefee (via Pro Football Talk), “I actually have not lost the itch. “I’ve been working out with a few guys over the offseason. I have been retired for the last two years, but you never know, Curt. But it’s the love of the game that I still have inside of me.”

The itch probably was exacerbated by Moss’ appearance at the Patriots-Saints joint practices in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia last week. Being around a football environment and catching some passes from Tom Brady on the sideline seemed to cause some sensory overload for Moss who happily chatted with media after the session ended and refused to commit to being retired.

Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston asked Moss if he was officially done having not played since the Ravens-Niners Super Bowl at the end of the 2012 season, Moss replied, “I would say never, but ahhhhh . . .lets leave it at that.”

While Moss was happily discussing the prospect of a return, the Patriots have agreed to a one-year deal with former Colts great Reggie Wayne.

The 36-year-old Wayne is obviously a more known commodity at this point. He had 64 catches last season for the Colts and is two years removed for a 106-catch season.

Moss had 28 catches in 2012 for the Niners and didn’t get a sniff of work the pass two seasons. He was out of the NFL in 2011 after the Patriots exiled him from Foxboro and Moss passed through Minnesota and Tennessee.

So he’s played 16 regular-season games over the past four years. And he’s 38.

The Patriots have been patching it together at wideout for the past two weeks. Julian Edelman, Aaron Dobson and Brian Tyms have all gone down and it’s been reported by The Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe that Tyms’ injury is season-threatening. Meanwhile, Brandon LaFell still isn’t back from his offseason surgery. Veteran role player Brandon Gibson, who’s had a nice, consistent run in preseason, hurt his knee Saturday night.

Somebody’s got to come in to help pick up the slack. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Moss heard from the Patriots in a tire-kicking manner. It would be a surprise if he signs and sticks.

But it would be a fun ride.
