Rafael Devers made another incredible defensive play for the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.
Against the New York Yankees, Devers was playing deep at third base when Gio Urshela cracked a hard-hit grounder down the third-base line. Devers showcased his range in speed in getting over to the ball to cut off a potential double. Then, from the fringe of the outfield, he rifled a rocket to first base where Sam Travis was able to make the pick and nab Urshela by a half a step.
Here's a look at the play, via the Red Sox official Twitter account.
Simply put, few third-basemen in the MLB can make that play. And earlier this season, few would have expected that Devers could be one that would make a play like that.
But over the course of the season, Devers has improved his defensive abilities and has showcased better range and a cannon of an arm. Though he is still tied for the major-league lead in errors with 17, he has only committed 8 in his last 71 games after committing 9 in his first 32 of the season.

The 22-year-old should only continue to get better at the third-base position as he continues to get more action there. And if he can keep making plays as he did on Friday night, he should have a chance to become a more-than-solid fielder at the position.
