The Red Sox made a trade Sunday, acquiring third baseman Carlos Rivero from the Mariners in exchange for cash, according to Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune.
Rivero, who was playing for the Mariners' Triple A affiliate Tacoma Rainiers, is slashing .256/.296/.372.
The 27-year-old played in four games with the Red Sox last season and spent time in 2014 between Portland (AA) and Pawtucket (AAA).
The Boston Globe's Peter Abraham reported that Rivero will go to Pawtucket.
