BOSTON − With the Red Sox currently 52-65 and not expected to make any sort of magical late postseason run, it makes sense to be trading away a few players that have no future with the team.
Already, the Sox parted ways with both Shane Victorino and Mike Napoli, and it's been assumed that Alejandro De Aza would eventually have his day.
That day could be approaching soon, as FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Dodgers are "talking to" the Red Sox about a potential trade for De Aza.
The Sox claimed De Aza off waivers earlier this year when they were desperately searching for some production in right field. De Aza had been released by the Orioles after a slow start to the season in which he batted .214 through 30 games. He's since turned things around in Boston, hitting .313 (47-for-150) with 25 RBI in 53 games.
But the Sox are out of contention and looking to develop outfielders like Jackie Bradley Jr. and Rusney Castillo the rest of the way. Besides, those two players are looking much better at the plate now than they were when the Sox signed De Aza. There's not much need for him anymore.
He could certainly be of use to a contender, as he's found his swing again and can play all three outfield positions. He also makes for a solid pinch-hitter or pinch-runner in the National League.
Don't expect the Sox to get much in return, but something is better than nothing. The move would also open up a roster spot on the Red Sox 40-man roster for somebody like Allen Craig, who the Sox may also want to get some at-bats for up in the majors before the season is out.
