The Boston Red Sox have designated pitcher Justin Masterson for assignment following their 7-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

The corresponding move has yet to be made by the the club.

"It was consistent strike throwing when you boil down to it," Farrell explained to reporters. "He flashed some better arm strength at various points in time this season but the overall consistency just wasn't there. He was tough on some right-handers. The ability to hold it together in a starting role multiple times through the order, that came and went. Then when we got him in the bullpen, again, he'd have flashes of some solid contributions. Again, it's the inconsistencies that led to this."

When asked if Masterson was sent down to make room for Mookie Betts, the Red Sox manager said he plans on going with a full bullpen.
