Merloni: Cueto would be a ‘huge risk' for Red Sox

New Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski made it clear in his introductory press conference that every team needs a clear number one starter to lead the rotation.

Royals ace Johnny Cueto is expected to hit the free agent market this offseason. Is he someone the Sox should make a serious run at?

Lou Merloni thinks the Red Sox would be taking a big chance making a long-term commitment to the 29-year-old righty.

"We are talking about a serious commitment, seven years," said Merloni. "I worry a little bit about him. There's been some elbow injuries, some concerns this year. I watch this guy pitch, there's no question he's electric. But he also has a different wind-up almost on every single pitch. I worry about the long-term commitment with him.

"Cueto is going to make every team better, there's no question. The question is for how long of that seven-year deal? Will it be two, three, four years? I think there's a huge risk with Johnny Cueto."
