Pedroia (hamstring) ‘progressing to the next level'

BOSTON - Dustin Pedroia continues to make progress as he rehabs from a strained hamstring that landed him back on the disabled list on July 25.

Pedroia, who played in six games after originally returning from the disabled list on July 17, went just 1-for-22 before getting placed back on it.

While his second DL stint has gone slower than anticipated, Pedroia did get some good news about the injury on Monday.

"Today he reached all his check points and he's now progressing to the next level," Torey Lovullo said. "As I earlier discussed he's on that next wave of baseball activity where he can do sprint work, he can do some base-running work. We will integrate it slowly with the idea of hopefully getting him into a game around September 10th. But before or after that, we're not exactly sure. Through his feedback, through his eyes, we're going to make that decision. But he did get good news today."

The fact that Pedroia is now running the bases is the most important thing, as that was what was slowing his progress.

Pedroia did not go on a rehab assignment after coming off the DL the first time with the injury. With the PawSox season being over by the time Sept. 10 rolls around, it's unclear if he'll play in any games elsewhere before re-joining the Red Sox.

"The discussion that we're having right now is what will be the best thing for Dustin and the Boston Red Sox," Lovullo said. "We haven't quite determined that. It just depends on what he does between now and seven days from now. We want to make sure that we're putting him in the right situation to get here as fast as possible."

Brock Holt has played the majority of games at second base since Pedroia's trip to the disabled list, but Holt too has been dinged up a bit, allowing for Josh Rutledge to get some time at the position.
