Larry Lucchino is out as Red Sox president and CEO, with Sam Kennedy set to fill his president position at the end of season.
With Lucchino – the man long believed to be the one behind baseball operations – out, Lou Merloni wonders whether or not GM Ben Cherington or coach John Farrell could be next?
"A lot of people have been talking of Sam Kennedy for a while now and he’s going to take over as president but kind of stay away from the baseball ops," Lou Merloni said. "What's the next move? What's the next shoe to drop? Who runs the baseball side of it? That there, looking around this locker room particularly guys like Ben Cherington and John Farrell, whoever comes in as head of baseball ops makes decisions on the general manager or the manager. That’s the big one to look at.
"That’s going to be tough. To see who sits in that seat overseeing it all. How are these guys back? The last couple of years it's been a tough go of it, hasn’t it? I think that’s going to be a tough call. They’re both good baseball men but when you look at this team you have to kind of shake your head about the direction, the amount of money that's spent the last couple of years. So tell me who’s going to run baseball ops and I’ll probably give you better idea if these guys back or not. But they have to be evaluated."
