The Arizona State Sun Devils are adding a former American League batting champion to their coaching staff.
Former Boston Red Sox third baseman Bill Mueller has been hired as ASU's hitting coach. The 50-year-old joins the staff of fellow former big-leaguer Willie Bloomquist, who was hired as the Sun Devils' new head coach earlier this month.
Mueller spent three seasons in Boston (2003-05), winning the batting title in '03 and helping the Red Sox break "The Curse" in '04. He'll forever be remembered for his clutch single off New York Yankees closer Mariana Rivera to drive in Dave Roberts and send Game 4 of the ALCS to extra innings.

There's also that time Mueller crushed three home runs -- including grand slams from both sides of the plate -- and tallied nine RBI vs. the Texas Rangers.
And let's not forget Mueller's walk-off homer vs. Rivera and the Yankees on July 24, 2004, the same day Jason Varitek and Alex Rodriguez had their infamous dust-up.

Mueller has stayed involved in baseball since retiring as a player in 2006. Shortly after his playing career, he worked with the Los Angeles Dodgers as a hitting coach and also worked in the front office. He served as the Chicago Cubs hitting coach in 2013 before joining the St. Louis Cardinals the following year as an assistant hitting coach.
