Earlier this offseason, Jason Varitek was named special assistant to general manager Ben Cherington.

Could another former Red Sox star be joining him?

Pedro Martinez, who last pitched for the Phillies in the 2009 World Series, may be be returning to the Red Sox in some capacity in the future.

Its probably just a matter of time, Martinez admitted

According to Martinez, he has an open invitation to return to the organization in which he spent seven years.

Thats pretty much the way our relationship is, Martinez said. Im really good friends with Ben Cherington. Any time I say, Hey, I want to go, I have an open door. I want to get close to Ben Cherington and (Larry) Lucchino, learn a little bit, see if I like the office or more on the field. Im just going to get my feet wet and see what I can learn from that.
