Ex-Patriot Meriweather signs with injury-riddled Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Giants have been decimated by injuries in the secondary -- rookie safeties Mykkele Thompson (Achilles tendon) and Landon Collins (knee), cornerbacks Trumaine McBride (hamstring), Jayron Hosley (concussion) and Chykie Brown (knee), and veteran safety Nat Berhe (calf) are among the injured, with Thompson out for the season -- and so they've turned to a familiar face for reinforcement.

Former Patriots free agent safety Brandon Meriweather, who earned two Pro Bowl berths during his four seasons (2007-10) in New England, signed with the Giants Sunday and practiced with them on a limited basis. He has spent the last four seasons in Washington, where he started 10 games last season and finished with 53 tackles, a career-high 3 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

He's not, however, without his issues. Per our friends at CSN Washington:

But Meriweather has had issues with the NFL over hits on players the league deemed defenseless, being fined five times over the course of his career. He was suspended for the first two games of the 2014 season after a helmet-to-helmet hit on Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith in the preseason . . . The year prior, he was fined $42,000 for a hit on Green Bay's Eddie Lacy.

And this was Pro Football Talk's take: Apparently desperate Giants sign Brandon Meriweather.

Ouch.
