New York Jets head coach Adam Gase won't be inviting ESPN and NFL Films to his Halloween party.
Adding further insult to the Jets' 33-0 loss to the Patriots on Monday night was mic'd up quarterback Sam Darnold's admission from New York's sideline that New England's defense had him "seeing ghosts."
It was surprising to hear Darnold admit to being so rattled. It was equally surprising that ESPN aired Darnold's comment, as there's usually a vetting process for "mic'd up" sound.
Asked Tuesday about #GhostGate, Gase responded with a harsh critique of that vetting process while singling out ESPN.
Gase's frustration is understandable, as Darnold's admission is a pretty bad look. So, who's to blame in all this?
According to the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta, the Jets consented to Darnold being mic'd up for Monday night's game but did not sign off on his "seeing ghosts" comment being aired.
In fact, Mehta reported, that decision was approved by an NFL Films on-site representative, who apparently had final say on which portions of Darnold's audio would be broadcast.
So, it sounds like Gase's ire should be directed at NFL Films, not ESPN.
Of course, this whole mess could have been avoided if Darnold hadn't played the worst game of his NFL career. But some things are better left unsaid.
