Some football minds can't manage a sentence without dropping a superfluous superlative (looking at youse guys, Troy Aikman, Ron Jaworski and Jon Gruden). Bill Belichick flings 'em around like manhole covers. But Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald hit a vein when he asked Belichick Monday about the performance of Vince Wilfork Sunday night. "I thought Vince did a terrific job for us last night," Belichick said in response to a question about the level of fitness Wilfork showed on a night when the defense was on the field twice as much as the Patriots offense. "Youre right, he was out there for a lot of plays74 plays or whatever it wasI forget the exact number, but it was a lot. I thought he played hard. He really had an outstanding game. They had a lot of attention directed at him, which is understandable, but he had a bunch of double teams and slides on the protection coming his way and those types of things."Wilfork signed a five-year, 40 million deal with 25 million guaranteed in the offseason. It's not unusual to see a player get a fat deal and get, well, fat and happy. But Wilfork's effort and leadership has been very good this season. He's not as engaging with the media as he was during his contract drive (a fact which matters mostly to those who work in media), but his play has beenvery good especially as he's been shuffled around the defensive line."I thought he was outstanding," said Belichick."Probably one of the best games hes played. Hes played a lot of good ones, but Id say thats one of the best ones hes played around here."Tom E. Curran can be reached at tcurran@comcastsportsnet.com.
