Cherington: Sox probably won't sign a pitcher

WORCESTER -- While not totally dismissing the possibility of a significant starting pitching acquisition in the next few weeks, general manager Ben Cherington said the Red Sox probably won't make any additions before spring training.
"We wouldn't rule out adding a starter,'' said Cherington, "but I think it's unlikely at this point. We'll keep looking for ways to improve the team, including the pitching staff, but I wouldn't expect any major changes before the reporting date.''
Cherington made his remarks at a Red Sox Town Hall event held at the Worcester Technical High School.
The Sox continue to maintain contact with the representatives for free agents Edwin Jackson and Roy Oswalt.
Oswalt met with the Texas Rangers earlier this week and also has interest in the St. Louis Cardinals. Jackson reportedly has a multiyear offer from the Baltimore Orioles, but continues to talk with other clubs.
