Talented prospect Triston Casas returning to WooSox after rehab stint

The Boston Red Sox' struggles at first base are no secret. Current first baseman Franchy Cordero is currently in an 0-for-16 slump, including 15 strikeouts in the his last five games, while Bobby Dalbec is hitting .205 on the season.

Entering the second half of the season, the Sox are battling teams for the Wild Card spot and could use a power-hitting first baseman. Top prospect Triston Casas might be just the help that the Red Sox need.

The 22-year-old was a call-up candidate earlier in the season, but sustained a high right ankle sprain on May 17. After a strong rehab stint in the Florida Complex League, Casas will likely return to Triple-A Worcester this week.

During his time playing in Florida, the 6-foot-4, 250 pounds first baseman boasted an impressive .429 batting average in 17 plate appearances over four games. He went 6-for-14, including a home run, three doubles, three walks, and two strikeouts. He also hit three RBIs.

"We're happy obviously with the progress he made," Brian Abraham, the Red Sox farm director, said, per The Boston Globe. "This week, hopefully he'll be active [in Worcester]."

Hopefully, Casas can continue his recent success with the WooSox.

"He's murdering the ball," one scout reported.

Casas has strong call-up potential, depending on the quality of his play in Worcester. If his power-hitting continues with the WooSox, the Red Sox might get some help from a new first baseman.
