NFL rumors: Patriots are releasing kicker Mike Nugent as trade deadline nears

The New England Patriots, once again, need a new kicker.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reported Tuesday, citing sources, that the Patriots are releasing kicker Mike Nugent.

Nugent was signed by the Patriots shortly after starting kicker Stephen Gostkowski was placed on injured reserve with a hip injury earlier this month.

Nugent played in four games with the Patriots. He converted on five of his eight field goal attempts and 15 of his 16 extra point kicks. The 37-year-old veteran missed two of his four field goal attempts in Sunday's Week 8 win over the Cleveland Browns.

Kicker Younghoe Koo, who had brief stay on the Patriots' practice squad this month, reportedly agreed to sign with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday, shortly after they cut longtime kicker Matt Bryant.

The NFL trade deadline is set for 4 p.m. ET Tuesday.
