Julian Edelman feels ‘terrible' for Josh Gordon after surprising IR news

Julian Edelman has zero sympathy for his opponents. But when it comes to teammates who were somewhat curiously placed on injured reserve? That's a different story.

The Patriots wide receiver joined WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show" on Friday to react to Wednesday's surprising news that New England had placed Josh Gordon on injured reserve.

"Yeah, it’s definitely tough," Edelman said. "I have been in that situation where you’re put on IR. It's terrible for a guy just because you don’t get to play football with the team this year.

"I feel for him. It’s an unfortunate situation that he had to be put on IR."

Edelman's IR experience was a bit different than Gordon's: He tore his ACL during the 2017 preseason and had no shot of returning that year. Gordon's injury is more minor, according to reports, and Edelman's comments suggest he was as surprised as some of his teammates to hear the news.

Edelman is willing and eager to support Gordon during his recovery, though.

"I wish him the best," Edelman added. "I hope all his rehab and everything goes well. I told him, 'If you need anything, I'm here.' Now, I'm focusing on the Cleveland Browns."

The Patriots indeed are moving ahead with a receiving corps that now includes Mohamed Sanu. And while Edelman clearly misses Gordon, he seems excited about the latest wideout to come through Foxboro.

"He’s a ballplayer, man," Edelman said of Sanu. "He’s played in this league for eight years now. He’s had a lot of production. He’s played in big games, and he can help us. He’s a stud."
