This Date In Celtics History: C's crush Lakers in ‘Memorial Day Massacre'

The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers played some heated, tightly-contested NBA Finals games throughout the 1980s.

Game 1 of the 1985 NBA Finals was not one of them.

Wednesday marks the 35th anniversary of the "Memorial Day Massacre," in which the Celtics absolutely eviscerated the Lakers with a 148-114 win at the Boston Garden.

Danny Ainge scored 15 points in the first quarter to set the tone, but backup forward Scott Wedman was the hero in this one, going a perfect 11-for-11 from the floor to score 26 points off the bench.

As for the Lakers? Star big man Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored just 12 points and actually apologized to his teammates after the 34-point rout, which at the time was the most lopsided result in Celtics-Lakers history.

The Celtics only have one other victory on this date (they're 2-3 on May 27) but it also came in the NBA Finals:

May 27, 1976: A 20-2 run in the third quarter powers the Celtics to a 105-90 win over the Phoenix Suns, giving them a 2-0 series lead in the 1976 NBA Finals.
