Marcus Smart wasn't a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year, but he was the top vote-getter among guards.
Smart received four third-place votes, edging out Patrick Beverley as the only other guard to receive votes. Rudy Gobert received 65 first-place votes to take home his second straight DPOY Award.
In 2018-19, Smart averaged 1.8 steals and 0.4 blocks per game while defending the opposing team's most dangerous perimeter threat. He also led the league in steal percentage (3.1), a statistic that estimates the percentage of opponent possessions that end with a steal by the player while he was on the floor.
He was named to the All-Defensive First Team with Eric Bledsoe and DPOY finalists Paul George, Rudy Gobert and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
