The Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox are delaying the start of their series in the wake of Daunte Wright's death Sunday in a Minneapolis suburb.

The Twins issued a statement around 2:30 p.m. ET on Monday announcing that their 2:10 p.m. ET series opener with the Red Sox at Target Field has been postponed.

"Out of respect for the tragic events that occurred yesterday in Brooklyn Center, and following additional details in this evolving situation, the Minnesota Twins have decided it is in the best interests of our fans, staff, players and community to not play today's game," the statement read in part.

A makeup date for the game has yet to be announced.

Wright, 20, was fatally shot by a police officer Sunday at a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. In a press conference Monday, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon described the shooting as an "accidental discharge," noting that the officer intended to fire a Taser at Wright instead of a handgun.

"It is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their taser but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet," Gannon said Monday. "This was an accidental discharge that resulted in a tragic death of Mr. Wright."

Monday's postponement came shortly after body camera footage of the incident was released, per the Associated Press' Jonathan Lemire.

Sunday's shooting sparked protests in an area already on edge as the trial of Derek Chauvin, the police officer charged in George Floyd's death, was set to continue Monday in Minneapolis.
