INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The hiring of Juan Nieves as pitching coach gives new Red Sox manager John Farrell three coaches, joining bench coach Torey Lovullo and third-base coach Brian Butterfield.
The Sox still need to find a first-base coach, a bullpen coach and, next on the to-do list, hitting coach.
Farrell indicated that the Sox may bring in candidates to interview as soon as this weekend.
Like other teams -- including the Los Angeles Dodgers -- the Red Sox are leaning toward hiring two hitting coaches
"Hiring two is not only being contemplated and discussed,'' said Farrell, "but sitting here today, that would be the preference. When you look at the time spent in the cage, in addition to getting ready for that night's game, the job has evolved into more than a one-man system. We're moving in that direction.''
