BOSTON -- Torey Lovullo is fair game for any team to interview for a managerial position, the Red Sox have made that clear.
With Mike Hazen headed for the desert, he’ll need to find someone to fill the managerial role for the Diamondbacks. Who better than a guy he’s had experience with?
“I’ll be surprised, I would say, if they don’t ask for permission to talk to Torey,” Dave Dombrowski said Monday to reporters. “I know how highly we think of him and how highly Mike thought of him.”
Lovullo. of course, had a short term as interim manager for the Red Sox when John Farrell had to leave the team to battle cancer in 2015. Ever since then, it’s been a question if Lovullo would take Farrell’s job had the team decided to part ways, but that’s not going to happen, at least in the offseason.
“In my opinion he’s ready to be a major league manager,” Dombrowski said about his bench coach.
Lovullo made that clear when he went 28-21 with a team that was 50-63 before he was put in charge. That would put another item on Dombrowski’s list of things to do in the offseason, but was something he’d expected after the Red Sox’ postseason ended.
This could be the chance for Brian Bannister to get in the dugout, if the team were to decide to move him to Carl Willis’ spot and put Willis on the bench by Farrell. Not likely, but a possibility.
