The Boston Bruins lost a valuable defenseman on the first day of NHL free agency.

Torey Krug agreed to sign a seven-year, $45.5 million contract with the St. Louis Blues on Friday. It's a well-deserved payday for a player who gave the Bruins very good on-ice production and impressive leadership.

Krug first joined the Bruins in 2012 as a college free agent out of Michigan State and quickly established himself as a fixture on the blue line.

It remains to be seen how the Bruins will replace Krug. They have around $15 million in salary cap space to find a replacement on the free agent market or make a trade. The internal options to fill Krug's role as a top-four defenseman aren't great.
