Wilfork suffers torn Achilles tendon

The Patriots suffered a severe blow in their 30-23 victory over the Falcons Sunday as Vince Wilfork tore his Achilles tendon and will most likely be out for the remainder of the season,

The news was first reported by Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe and confirmed by CSNNE.com's Tom E. Curran.

Wilfork was carted off the field during the first quarter of New England's 30-23 win over Atlanta on Sunday night. He was later announced as "questionable" to return with an ankle injury.

The Patriots are thin on the defensive line with Tommy Kelly, Joe Vellano and Chris Jones as the team's only listed defensive tackles. (Defensive end Chandler Jones often went inside to play at the tackle spot on Sunday night, with rookie Michael Buchanan filling in at end.)

Rookie defensive tackle Armond Armstead is on the reserve/non-football injury list after undergoing surgery for an infection during the offseason. He is eligible to begin practicing after New England's Week 6 game against the Saints.
