Gilmore tied for the NFL lead in interceptions with six and also topped the league in pass breakups (20). The three-time Pro Bowler was a key part of a Patriots defense that was spectacular for most of the season. New England led the league with a +21 turnover differential, as well as in total defense (275.9 yards per game) and scoring defense (14.1 points allowed per game).

Before taking home the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, Gilmore was also recognized as the league's best defensive player by his NFL peers and the Pro Football Writers of America.
