Michel (knee) returns to Patriots practice after missing three sessions

The Patriots moved their Saturday practice indoors thanks to some nasty weather in Foxboro, and when they did they were joined by rookie running back Sony Michel.

That qualifies as news late in Week 8 as Michel was not present for any of the team’s first three practices of the week. He injured his knee in Chicago on the first play of the second quarter last Sunday and did not return.

Prior to his injury against the Bears, Michel had three consecutive games where he eclipsed 100 total yards. With Michel out for three quarters last week, the Patriots leaned on James White (11 carries) and Kenjon Barner (10 carries) for career-highs in attempts.

Michel’s return to practice doesn’t mean he should be expected to play against the Bills on Monday night, but it does leave the window of opportunity open that he could be in uniform. ESPN has reported Michel’s injury to be a “week-to-week” issue, and if he sits in Buffalo, he could be back the following week at home against the Packers.

The fact that he was back on the practice field Saturday means he’s trending in the right direction, at the very least.

Rob Gronkowski (ankle/back) was present for the session, as was Marcus Cannon (concussion). Both players have been present for each Patriots practice since Wednesday and have been limited with their respective ailments.

The lone players not spotted Saturday, according to reporters on the scene, were Eric Rowe and Brian Schwenke.
