Trot Nixon, Red Sox combine first-pitch ceremony with hurricane relief efforts

Trot Nixon will throw out the first pitch before Game 1 of the ALDS on Friday night, but it'll be more than just giving fans a chance to cheer an old hero.

Nixon, a native of North Carolina, will also use the opportunity to raise money to aid victims of Hurricane Florence.

The ex-Red Sox right fielder is organizing a collection at all Fenway Park gates on Friday to benefit those affected by Florence. The collection will take place from the time gates open at 5:32 p.m., through the second inning, and will benefit American Red Cross relief efforts in North Carolina.

Nixon broke in with the Sox in 1996 and was with them through 2006, helping win a World Series championship in 2004. He also played for the Indians in 2007 -- losing to the Sox in that year's ALCS -- and the Mets in 2008.
