Lou Merloni shares his instant reaction to reports that the Red Sox are finalizing a deal to send Andrew Benintendi to the Royals. Merloni says the only explanation he sees is the team has lost faith in the outfielder.

Boston Red Sox newcomer Franchy Cordero will have to wait a while to join his teammates for spring training in Fort Myers, Fla.

The 26-year-old outfielder, who was acquired in the three-team deal that sent Andrew Benintendi to the Kansas City Royals, was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Monday. It's currently unclear whether Cordero tested positive for COVID-19 or was a close contact with someone who had the virus.

The Red Sox also announced they've claimed right-hander Joel Payamps off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, making his second stint with the team.

Cordero can be activated from the COVID-19 related IL as soon as he clears MLB's protocols.

Through 95 games with the Royals and San Diego Padres, Cordero has hit .236 with 12 home runs, 36 RBIs and a .737 OPS. The Dominican Republic native has high upside with impressive power and speed, but injuries have plagued his career to this point.
