Michael Chavis in the Home Run Derby?: ‘If I was allowed to, yeah'

As one of the most exciting rookies in baseball, Michael Chavis deserves to be showcased on all of MLB's biggest stages.

With 10 home runs through the first 29 games of his big-league career, this year's Home Run Derby would be a great place for the 23-year-old slugger to start. But would he be interested in competing?

"If I was allowed to, yeah," Chavis told Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. “I like hitting home runs. I think it would be fun and be a cool experience. It’s something during my career that I definitely want to do."

In 2017, the Red Sox prevented Chavis from competing in the Carolina League derby. So he isn't getting his hopes up for the chance to partake in the MLB one any time soon.

“I wasn’t even allowed to be in the Home Run Derby when I was in High-A," Chavis said. "The Red Sox wouldn’t let me, so I doubt they’ll let me do it here.

“If they did ask me to do it, I’d probably have to ask the Sox and think about it. At some point, I want to do it.”

With a new purse of $1 million for the winner, it's no surprise Chavis is showing serious interest in competing. When David Ortiz and Adrian Gonzalez represented Boston in the 2011 derby, the prize was a mere $125,000.

Even if Chavis can't compete in the derby, there's a real chance he's named to the American League All-Star team if he keeps up his torrid pace. And with his power, we can safely assume we'll see him in a Home Run Derby at some point down the road if not this year.
