The New England Revolution have made a big splash on Day 1 of Major League Soccer's secondary primary transfer window, adding Argentine forward Gustavo Bou from Liga MX side Club Tijuana.
The 29-year-old joins the Revs as their second Designated Player, alongside Carles Gil — and Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena and Technical Director Curt Onalfo have made a move that is believed to be the largest investment in a single player in franchise history.
The transfer fee is reportedly in the range of $6-7 million, while the whole deal (transfer fees and salary) could be worth $12 million with bonuses and options that could push the package to north of $16 million.
Arena tells NBC Sports Boston on "State of the Revs" (airing Thursday at 8:30pm) the facets of his game that can help the squad.
"He's an attacking player. He has a history of scoring goals in the all the leagues he has played in. We have been able to follow him for years. I lived in Southern California. I was well aware of his presence with Tijuana. Curt Onalfo, our Technical Director, has followed him. We were aware of the player. When he became a thought and had an interest we thought it was great because to acquire a player of his experience and his level here is I think is big. Hopefully, he can get on the field and make the adjustment quickly and be a player that can make a difference for us."
Bou has recorded 120 combined goals and assists in Argentina, Mexico, and Ecuador. In 55 matches with Club Tijuana, he had 21 goals and 14 assists.
He totaled 44 goals in more than 100 appearances with Argentine top flight side Racing Club and led all scorers in the 2015 Copa Libertadores. Bou began his career with River Plate at age 18 in 2008 after developing with the club's reserve team.
