Revolution acquire Edgar Castillo, trade away Kelyn Rowe in 3-team deal

One of the longest-tenured members of the New England Revolution is headed out of town, with the Revs shipping Kelyn Rowe away in exchange for left back Edgar Castillo as part of a three-team deal Tuesday.

The 32-year-old Castillo had three goals and five assists for the Colorado Rapids in 2018 after spending 11 years in Mexico's Liga MX. He's also a veteran of both the Mexican and U.S. national teams, one of only two players ever to earn senior caps for both countries.

Castillo has earned 18 caps for the United States, including six in the 2014 and 2018 World Cup qualification. He also helped the USMNT clinch the Concacaf Gold Cup title in 2013.

“We are excited to welcome Edgar to the Revolution and look forward to having him join us in New England ahead of preseason next month,” said Revs general manager Michael Burns. “We believe his experience at both the domestic and international levels, including his successful first season in MLS with the Rapids last year, will immediately benefit us this season.”

In exchange for Castillo, the Revolution sent Rowe to the Rapids, who then traded him to Sporting KC for forward Diego Rubio.

The 27-year-old Rowe was a seven-year Revs veteran, racking up 29 goals and 40 assists over his 206 games. He's one of only four players in team history with 40 career assists.

Beyond that, he was heavily involved in charitable endeavors off the field, including fighting childhood cancer through his work with Jessie Rees Foundation and Kelyn’s NEGU Crew. Rowe was named the Revolution Humanitarian of the Year four straight times from 2014-17.

“On behalf of the organization, I want to thank Kelyn for the past seven years he has spent representing the New England Revolution with professionalism on and off the field,” Burns said. “Beyond his numerous contributions on the field, he will always be remembered by the club and the fans for his work in the community. We wish Kelyn all the best.”
