The Carolina Hurricanes sure are acting like a team that is going to match the offer sheet the Montreal Canadiens tendered to restricted free agent forward Sebastian Aho on Monday, and they took some time to troll the Original Six club with a hilarious Twitter poll.
The 'Canes tweeted a poll asking "Will we match the offer sheet for Sebastian Aho?" The only answers in the poll are "Yes and "Oui". Oui, of course, means yes in french.
The Canadiens and Aho agreed to a five-year offer sheet worth about $42 million Monday, the first day of NHL free agency. The Hurricanes could take a week to match (or not match) the offer sheet, which could complicate the Canadiens' ability to target other free agents.
Montreal really dropped the ball here. Not only did it fail to configure an offer sheet that Carolina might consider not matching, the Canadiens also are at risk of missing out on other free agents while the Hurricanes take their time responding to this offer sheet.
For what it's worth, only one of the eight previous offer sheets tendered since the 2004-05 lockout were not matched.
