Rask played for Ilves Tampere of Finnish league SM-liiga from 2004-05 through 2006-07. He was the No. 1 goalie for the Ilves Tampere senior team in 2006-07 before coming to North America and making his NHL debut with the Bruins on Nov. 20, 2008 in a 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

He never played a game for the Leafs (or their AHL team) before being traded to Boston in 2006. It is considered one of the worst trades of the last 25 years. Toronto gave up on Rask way too early and hasn't had a goalie of his caliber since trading him.

Rask played for the AHL's Providence Bruins in 2007-08 and 2008-09. He posted a 30-20-4 record with a .915 save percentage for the P-Bruins in 2008-09. He became Boston's starting goalie in 2009-10 when Tim Thomas was out of the lineup due to injury. Thomas regained his job in 2010-11 and 2011-12. When Thomas left the B's in 2012, Rask took over the No. 1 job for the 2012-13 campaign and didn't relinquish it.
