The Boston Bruins are still on pace to have one of the best regular seasons in NHL history, and they tied an impressive record with their exciting overtime win over the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.
It was the Bruins' 40th victory of the season, improving their record to 40-8-5 overall and seven points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes for first place in the Eastern Conference and the league as a whole.

The B's tied with the 2015-16 Washington Capitals for the fewest games needed to win 40 games at 53.
Boston also tied the 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers for the most points (85) in the first 53 games of a season in league history.
The Bruins' record for points in a single season is 121, which they set in the 1970-71 campaign with a 57-14-7 record. They lost to the rival Montreal Canadiens in the quarterfinals that season, but they won the Stanley Cup the year before and the year after.
The record for the most points by a team in the regular season is 132 set by the 1976-77 Canadiens. The Bruins are currently on pace for 131 points. The only other team to reach the 130-point mark was the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings.
