BRIGHTON, Mass. – There were no roster fireworks for the Bruins on the final day for players to be put on waivers final to regular season NHL rosters being finalized, but there were a few B’s players left out for the taking.
Seth Griffith, Tyler Randell and Tim Schaller were all placed on waivers at noontime on Monday after not cracking the final NHL roster for the Bruins and there’s a chance at least one of those players (Griffith) gets scooped up by another organization prior to the start of the regular season.
A former fifth-round pick, Griffith actually had a pretty good training camp this month coming off 24 goals and 77 points in the AHL last season. He showed the same offensive instincts and ability to finish off players that allowed him to spend 30 games with the B’s a couple of years ago.
But there simply wasn’t any place for him on the NHL roster with youngsters Austin Czarnik and Danton Heinen excelling in their push for NHL jobs and a sense that that the 5-foot-9, 192-pound Griffith wouldn’t be very successful in a bottom-six role at the NHL level with the Black and Gold.
It was a numbers game with Schaller after he missed time at the beginning of camp with a lower body injury, and Randell was a tough omission after serving splendidly in a fourth line enforcer-type role with the Black and Gold last season.
Randell scored six goals in his 27 games with the Bruins last season in addition to the energy and toughness he brought, so it wouldn’t surprise at all to see the 25-year-old back up with the team in certain situations this season.
The three B’s players put on waivers was initially reported by TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie in a tweet shortly after noontime on Monday.
