WILMINGTON – In a move that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, young Bruins prospects Frank Vatrano, Austin Czarnik and Linus Arnesson weren’t with the main group at training camp on Tuesday after struggling in Monday night’s loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
Coach Claude Julien wouldn’t confirm whether they’d been cut from camp as of early Tuesday afternoon but that’s the clear, logical explanation behind their absence from the ice.
“They’re not cut until the team releases that, and I don’t know what’s been said. I’ve got the guys that were at my disposal today. I haven’t talked to [Don Sweeney] after practice,” said Julien. “We’re getting near the end here, and there’s a lot at stake for a lot of guys. So it’s important for everybody to be at their best, so it makes for some interesting, good practices.”
While those three talented youngsters clearly weren’t the reason the Black and Gold dropped a lifeless outing vs. Detroit, they looked a bit overmatched as the NHL competition ramps up in the final week of the preseason. Czarnik and Vatrano had zero shots on net, and Arnesson was on ice for each of the first two goals against including a mix-up with Joe Morrow that led to Detroit’s second goal by Tomas Jurco.
With those players absent from camp and Zdeno Chara, Dennis Seidenberg and Seth Griffith injured, the remaining 30 players took the ice for one giant practice at Ristuccia Arena on Tuesday.
Julien following the session that Jonas Gustavsson will get the call for the full game against the Rangers on Wednesday night, and that Zdeno Chara has already been ruled out for the second-to-last game of the preseason.
