The Patriots announced on Tuesday that they have placed wide receiver Brian Tyms on their season-ending injured reserve list.
Tyms sustained a foot injury in a joint practice with the Saints and was not able to play in the Patriots preseason win in New Orleans on Saturday. He was waived with an injury designation on Monday and cleared waivers on Tuesday.
When healthy, Tyms gave the Patriots with a receiving option on the outside with the ability to stretch the field. Given the injuries sustained by receivers Brandon LaFell and Aaron Dobson this preseason, Tyms was provided an opportunity to further establish himself in the Patriots offense before going down last week.
Tyms also had some special teams value, serving as a gunner on the punt team.
Last season, Tyms played in 11 regular season games, starting two, and appeared in one playoff game for the Patriots. He had five catches for 82 yards and one touchdown, a 43-yard completion from Tom Brady against Bills that highlighted his potential as a deep threat.
In order to bolster the team's depth at the receiver position, the team agreed to a one-year deal with Reggie Wayne on Monday. Wayne join a receiving depth chart that includes LaFell (on the physically unable to perform list), Julian Edelman (has not played in either preseason game due to injury), Dobson (has not played in either preseason game due to injury), Danny Amendola, Josh Boyce, undrafted rookie Chris Harper, undrafted rookie Zach D'Orazio and second-year player Jonathan Krause.
