Tom Brady pleads ignorance on Ben Watson's expected return to Patriots

Tom Brady isn't counting his chickens before they hatch.

The New England Patriots reportedly are expected to re-sign tight end Ben Watson after releasing him last week, which would give Brady a veteran target in a thin position group.

But when Westwood One's Jim Gray asked Brady how he feels about Watson's return Monday night, the Patriots quarterback pleaded the fifth.

"I don't know if that's true or not. I haven't heard anything," Brady told Gray. "I'm kind of proceeding as usual. I don't know what the status of those positions are."

Brady seemed upset by Watson's initial release last week, telling reporters he'll miss the 38-year-old tight end and adding, "Whoever's out there, that's who I gotta play with."

The two formed a bond during Watson's six-year stint in New England from 2004 to 2009, so it's hard to imagine Brady is completely oblivious to his tight end's expected return.

But the Patriots' personnel department has been very active lately -- they reportedly worked out a wide receiver and a cornerback and plan to sign another tight end in Eric Tomlinson -- so perhaps Brady just wants to let the dust settle.

"It's a lot of moving parts at this time of year," Brady added. "There's a lot of workouts that are taking place. New players coming in and working out for our team, working out for every team."
