Benjamin Watson has returned to the New England Patriots ... again.
Even though the Patriots haven't officially announced Watson has re-signed, the veteran tight end was spotted during the portion of Tuesday's practice that's open to the media.
Watson was signed by the Patriots in May following a brief retirement. He was suspended for the first four games of the 2019 season because of a failed drug test, but didn't play in Week 5 despite being eligible. He was released the day after New England's Week 5 win over the Washington Redskins.
The Patriots certainly could use additional depth at tight end. Matt LaCosse has battled injury throughout the preseason and regular season, and he wasn't spotted during the media portion of Tuesday's session. The 27-year-old tight end is dealing with a knee injury.
LaCosse and Ryan Izzo have played the majority of the tight end snaps this season, and neither has made a profound impact in the passing attack. These two players have combined for just 13 receptions, 169 receiving yards and one touchdown through six games.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said last Tuesday it was "tough" to hear the news of Watson's release, so you can bet the six-time Super Bowl champion is happy the veteran tight end is back in the fold.
The Patriots will play the rival New York Jets in Week 7 on Monday Night Football.
