Should Patriots Consider Ray Rice for third down back?

With Shane Vereen gone to the New York Giants, the Patriots’ stable of third down backs appears thin, with second-year man James White and free agent signee Travaris Cadet heading the depth chart at that spot.

Could the team look toward Ray Rice? The former Baltimore Ravens star has been without a team since his contract was terminated by the Ravens last September. Neither Michael Felger nor Bob Ryan think so.

“They would be willing to put up with the baggage if [Rice] were coming off a 4.5 [yards per attempt] year and not a 3.1 year,” said Ryan. “He’s unemployed because people don’t think he can play.”

Felger mostly concurred, saying that if Rice “was a superstar, yes, he’d be back in the NFL. If he didn’t have that rap, I’m not saying he’d be a star but he would definitely be getting another shot.”
