Odell Beckham Jr. caused a bit of a stir earlier this month for saying he wants to turn the Cleveland Browns into the next New England Patriots and win multiple championships. Nothing he said was bad, although it might have been a little over-the-top.
OBJ ended up walking back those comments in an Instagram story, but former Patriots safety and current NBC Sports analyst Rodney Harrison still isn't happy with what the superstar wide receiver had to say.
Harrison went on CBS Sports Radio and offered a simple message for Beckham and the Browns.
“I think the first thing they have to do is if they want to be like the Patriots, they have to shut up," Harrison said on "The Zach Gelb Show." "You don’t need Odell Beckham talking, talking about he’s trying to be like the Patriots. Just shut up and play, OK?"
Harrison is right about one thing -- the Patriots don't talk much. The "Patriot Way" is all about being humble, staying focused on the next opponent and not giving the other team any kind of bulletin board material or scouting info as a result of talking too much to the media. It's probably not the most enjoyable approach for players, but it's hard to argue with the results in New England -- the Patriots just won their sixth Super Bowl in February.
The Browns have a few players, Beckham and quarterback Baker Mayfield most notably, who aren't afraid to speak their mind publicly. There's nothing wrong with that, but if expectations aren't met, there will be plenty of criticism thrown toward these two stars. And Beckham has set the bar even higher for the Browns in 2019 with his comments on becoming the next Patriots.
