Coming off perhaps its best game of the season vs. the Packers on Sunday night, the Patriots defense made another addition on Monday morning.
Safety Obi Melifonwu, who was released by the Raiders Oct. 23 and worked out with the Pats last week, will sign with New England, his agent told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Melifonwu, 6-3, 224 pounds from Grafton, Mass., was drafted 56th overall out of UConn by Oakland in 2017, but injuries have derailed his brief NFL career. He has appeared in five games and started one, spent 10 weeks on injured reserved with hip and knee injuries and had what the Raiders called “a lower body injury” before his release.
He also worked out for the Chiefs Cowboys, and Saints last week and joins a Patriots safety group that includes Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, Duron Harmon and Nate Ebner.
