Report: Patriots' Matt LaCosse out several weeks with sprained MCL

Turns out there was a good reason why the New England Patriots are re-signing Ben Watson.

Patriots tight end Matt LaCosse is expected to miss "at least a few weeks" after spraining his MCL in Thursday's win over the New York Giants, NFL Media's Mike Giardi reported Monday.

Per Giardi, LaCosse suffered the injury on the Patriots' opening drive of the game on a failed fourth-and-1 attempt. The tight end played through the injury, though, logging 15 snaps in New England's 35-14 win.

LaCosse and Ryan Izzo were the only active tight ends in that game, which necessitates bringing Watson back ahead of next Monday's matchup with the New York Jets.

Watson hasn't played in a game this season, while Izzo has six catches for 114 yards and a touchdown through six games. LaCosse has just three catches for 55 yards in four games played -- he missed Weeks 1 and 3 due to injury -- although he contributed as a blocker in the run game.

Watson likely will take the roster spot vacated by injured fullback Jakob Johnson, who was placed on injured reserve last Friday.
